WALK the WALK

Hello to all those who "Do not walk softly into that good night." Ideals require action or else they will just blow away like leaves in the wind. We have one of the strongest/active ABATE organizations in the nation and we should be proud of that. Not only do we have a responsibility to the bikers of South Dakota but since we play host to the largest motorcycle rally in the world, we cannot drop the ball for those from around the globe who depend on us to try to keep it as free as possible. ABATE groups from other states contact us and ask how we do it and one of our methods is Legislative Days. You can't swing a dead cat and not hit black leather at the capital when we show up. We let them know we are a force to be reckoned with. Hobnobbing with them also shows that we care about what they are doing [hopefully for the good of the common people]. I heard about some goomer even going as far as licking them on the face last year, that might be a little excessive but hey whatever it takes. That same clown met with Senator Ed Olson and got the Drivers Education Bill started and worked with him to get the details ironed out so every kid can become a safer driver for all who use the roadways. Used to be Drivers Ed was a standard class until private groups took it away so they could make money for themselves at $200. plus a shot. So if you can't afford it you die or take somebody else out with you? I don't care if you are going to be a doctor or a janitor you still have to drive to get there. ABATE can not only help bikers but also society as a whole. Alright soapbox done, on to chapter news. Our "Chili Challenge Cook-Off" is Feb. 17th at the Little Colinga Bar located at 8th and Indiana in Sioux Falls. Sign in for cooks is 11:00am to 12:30pm, judging starts at 12:30pm. We will have Chef officials awarding 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place ribbons and also a People's Choice Award. We will also be having a Ham and Turkey raffle, door prizes, etc. Bring yer appetite! Tips; Bring your chili pre-cooked and pre-heated in a crockpot type vessel, and bring it early enough to have it at the proper temperature for judging. Here are some crockpot safety tips from the University of Minnesota; <> Preheat the cooker and add hot liquids, if possible.<> Make sure meat or poultry is completely thawed before putting in a slow cooker. If frozen pieces are used, they will not reach 140 degrees quick enough and could possibly result in a food borne illness.<> Fill cooker no less than half full and no more than two-thirds full.<> If possible, turn on high for the first hour of cooking and then to the lower setting called for in your recipe. This is highly recommended when cooking meat or poultry in a slow cooker.<> Do not take off the cover during cooking. The temperature drops 10 to 15 degrees when the lid is removed.<> Do not reheat foods in a slow cooker. However, cooked food can be reheated on the stove or in the microwave to 165 degrees and then put into a preheated slow cooker to keep the food hot until serving.<> Before taking a bite, check meat and poultry with a food thermometer to make sure it has reached a safe internal temperature to destroy bacteria; Roasts 145 to 160 degrees, chicken 170 degrees, and ground beef and "CHILI" 160 degrees.<<<>>> Your chili might taste like crap but we don't want anybody getting sick from it. Slack Addy won the 50/50 drawing, I think it was rigged 'cause his wife won last time. We want to thank Darci at the Bullet bar in Sherman. Our newest member is Charlie Brechtel who is the host of an international internet talk show called "Bikers Inner Circle" out of Californie. His band will be the house entertainment at the Buffalo Chip. He has played with the likes of Greg Allman, B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, and being from New Orleans, Arron Nevile. Check out his website, his wife Sabrina does ABATE news from across the nation to the world. I'm a hunt an' peck typer an' my finger is getting tired. Later, WIZ
