SERENITY
(1) Grant me the Serenity to ACCEPT the things
I CANNOT change, (2) the COURAGE to change the things I CAN, (3) and the WISDOM
to know the difference. (1) There are many things in this world that we have no
power over, like the weather, people's greed, earthquakes, floods, etc. And on
an individual basis we cannot change the price of oil, insurance rates, man's
inhumanity to man, the world economy, global warming, and many of the woes that
besiege us. Getting your knickers in a bunch over them will do nothing but upset
you and make you want to say "Heck with it, I'll just get drunk and forget about
it." Whenever I'm faced with a situation like that I say "See # 1!" That
includes any person, place, or thing that we cannot change and all that we can
do is ACCEPT it and go on. (2) However there are things that we CAN change if we
have the COURAGE and tenacity to get off our butts and do more than just cry in
our beer about them. ABATE of South Dakota has alot to be proud of in that
respect. Other states look to us in how successful we have been in our fight
against the powers that be. Since we not only have a responsibility to the
bikers of our state but because we host the largest gathering of bikers in the
world we take our duties seriously. An example one of the things we do is our
commitment to Legislative Days in Pierre. You can't swing a dead cat and not hit
black leather in the capitol building. Our state legislators/Senators pay
attention when they are surrounded by the swarthy characters of our breed.
Bikers to the left of them, Bikers to the right! We know we are all a bunch of
pussycats if you get to know us, but they don't. Might as well use the
stereotype image to get our point across for the continuation of freedom. And it
isn't just that, money talks. We know where to hit them in our issues since
tourism is this states number one source of income. And we all have a darn good
time gathering up there anyway. If you have never made it you really should, the
more the merrier. I understand the California ABATE is just about dead from
their last battle to repeal the helmet law, only a small handful of bikers even
showed up for the most important vote of their lives. They dropped the ball big
time. Thank God we make it a priority around here. Bottom line is you CAN change
things if you have the COURAGE! (3) The WISDOM to fight the good fight and not
put your energy to a lost cause. Choose the battles you engage in carefully, you
have the potential to do more harm than good and discredit your entire
organization. That's why we go through the process of collectively deciding
which issues we set our sights on. Not just one loose cannon rolling around
stirring up a big stink. I think I might be guilty of this offence in my efforts
for years of trying to get Drivers Education back in school for everyone, not
just the ones who can afford it. I got criticized quite a bit and shut down
individually but now with more than myself behind it there is a possibility of
it happening. We'll see. I think that about covers it for now.
On to Zzen chapter news; I couldn't make the Christmas party in Chancellor but I
hear they had a good time. Not many issues were discussed, just food,
fellowship, and bullsh*t! Hey, there is definitely a time and place for that and
this was it. We can't be serious all the time, you know what they say, "All work
and no play... YADA-YADA-YADA!!" One of these times I'm gonna have to make a
meeting, I'm waitin' till I can ride again to one of 'em. It's all downhill to
Spring from here on, hope, hope, wish, wish. I suppose if I put on every piece
of clothing an' leathers I got I could but, "Been There, Done That!" These old
bones get cold easily. Patience is a virtue. Our next secret, clandestine, "For
your Eyes only", CIA approved, Dick Chaney to attend, New World Order, Global
Domination, Armegedonistic, Nostradomis predicted, meeting is at the Davis Bar
in Davis, February 7th, @ 1 pm. If I survive I'll see ya around, HOOTIE-HOOT!!!
